Georg Műller Stiftung

The Georg Müller estate is located in the center of the picturesque and ancient village of Hattenheim on the Rhine and in the Rheingau, Germany's most reputed wine producing area. The estate was founded by George Müller at the end of the 19th century. The property, made up of about 6 hecates, is small but possesses a number of the most renowned vineyards (sites) within the area, such as e.g. "Schützenhaus"and "Wisselbrunnen," among others. Not surprisingly the wines of the estate became, within a relatively short time, well-known and reputed among connoisseurs. In 1913 Georg Müller donated the estate to his hometown stipulating that the profits of the estate should be used to help the needy of the village. Thus, the estate became known as "Georg Müller Stiftung" (foundation). In 1972 Hattenheim was integrated into the larger municipality of Eltville. In 2003, the city of Eltville decided to privatize the estate rather than to continue managing it themselves.

The choice of who should become the new owner of the estate eventually fell on Peter Winter. At the time, Mr. Winter, a distinguished personality of the German and International wine trade, was the Chairman of the Board of Germany's leading winery. Under his leadership, the company had become one of the ten largest wine companies in the world. He had, for a long time, desired to own, after his retirement, a reputed estate himself. The Georg Müller Stiftung estate was somewhat dormant when he acquired it. A lot of attention and a great amount of investment would be required to bring it back to its old glory. In 2005, he decided to retire from his position in order to focus on developing the estate and realize his long held dream.

Under the motto "A Tradition with a Future" he has since made great strides by implementing wide ranging quality improvement measures such as manual harvest, reducing the yield, planting ecologically, thinning (of grape bunches) as well as harvesting late and selectively (picking ripe grapes several times rather than harvesting all in one go). With his cellar master he also installed the most modern equipment and instituted strict quality oriented cellar techniques. After some tough initial years he is now obtaining the desired results. The wines of the estate have again become much sought after. They have been awarded many of the highest National and International awards. Essentially two grape varieties are grown on the estate, the Riesling (almost 90%) and Spätburgunder (about 10%). Both are Germany's noblest grapes. The majority of the wines produced are dry or off-dry with the exception of the rare premium wines like Auslese, BA, Eiswein and TBA which, when produced, are fruity or sweet.
