Altos R is an estate and a winery in the town of Laguardia which is located in the Alavesa area of La Rioja. Vine growing in the area dates back to the 2nd century B.C. The vineyards are located in the heart of Rioja's best vine growing areas around Laguardia, Elvillar and Kripan at a height of about 700m on the slopes of the Sierra de Cantabria. The microclimate for growing vines is excellent with dry summers, warm to hot days and cool nights while the mountains protect the area from humidity and cold of the north. All wines are made from grapes grown on 20 to 40 years old vines.

Altos is what one might call a boutique winery. The winery was established in 2006 by two of Spain's most respected and experienced professionals Roberto San Ildefonso of Finca Sobrenoin Toro and Bienvenido Munoz of Bodegas Munoz in La Mancha. Both are well known and reputed wine-makers in different regions of Spain. They came together to create their vision of an elegant up-to-date Rioja wine.Since then the different grades of Altos wines (Roble, Crianza, Reserva and Pigeage) have won many awards nationally and internationally. Both wine-makers are helped in their endeavours by the well-known flying wine-maker from Bordeaux Jean-Marc Sauboua (previously Chateau Haut-Brion). It should be noted that all grapes are harvested manually (rather than mechanically) which is followed by a two-step grapes selection process. The wines are aged for selective periods in French and American oak barrels before being bottled.
