ウアルペ・エステイトは2003年にマックスとホセ・トッソの2兄弟が設立しました。もし、トッソ兄弟が125年以上前の1880年に始まった長いファミリーの歴史を持っていなかったら、ストーリーとしてかなり短くなるでしょう。彼らの有名な祖先、パスクアル・トッソがイタリアのピエモンテ州からアルゼンチンのメンドーサ州に来ました。イタリアでのファミリー・ワイン・ビジネスの一部でしたが、彼は素早くその地域で素晴らしいワインが造れる将来性を評価し、すぐにメンドーサ州に最初のトッソ・ワイナリーを設立しました。

トッソ兄弟はアルゼンチンでのファミリー・ワイン・ビジネスの環境で育ちましたが、自分たちが何を造りたいのか、また自分たちの目標をどのように達成するかに対して彼ら自身の考えを持っていました。自分たちのエステイトを始める前に、彼らは各自の専門知識を国際的に広げたいと思いました。つまり、ワイン生産者であるホセはワイン生産者主任として10年間イタリアやドイツで働きました。一方、総括マネージャーであるマックスはアルゼンチンや合衆国のマッキンゼー・アンド・カンパニーでコンサルタントとして数年間働きました。新しい事業を開始する準備ができたと感じた2003年に、アレグロに本拠地を置きました。900から1,000メートルの高度の村は、アンデス山脈の山麓の丘にあります。そこのテロワールは、凝縮味や複雑性があり構成のしっかりした、そして極めて素晴らしい熟成の可能性のあるワインを生産するアルゼンチンで最高のテロワールの一つです。

この兄弟は、素晴らしいブドウが育つ他の2つの地域、マイプとウコ・ヴァレーでもワインを造っています。彼らは、異なったテロワールや生育条件をうまく表現するワインを造ること、さらに、よくある高抽出された力強いワインでなくエレガントでバランスの良いワインを細心の注意を払って造ることに焦点をあてています。

このエステイトは、16世紀のスペインの征服前にメンドーサの広大な土地に居住した友好的で勤勉な先住民、ウアルペ民族に尊敬の念をはらい”ウアルペ（Huarpe）” と命名されました。同じ精神で、生産される様々な種類のワインは、ブドウが育っているテロワールにちなんでウアルペ語で名付けられています。

The Huarpe Estate was created in 2003 by two brothers: Max and Jose Toso.
As such it would be a rather short story were it not for the fact that the Toso brothers represent a long family history which started more than 125 years ago in 1880.
It was then that Pasqual Toso, their famous ancestor, arrived in Mendoza from Piedmont in Italy.
Having been part of the family's wine business in Italy he quickly recognized the potential for producing excellent wines in the area and soon created the first Toso winery in Mendoza.

The two brothers grew up in the family's wine business in Argentina, but they had their own ideas about what they wanted to create and how to achieve their goals. Before starting their own estate they wanted to broaden their repective expertise internationally.
So Jose, who is the winemaker, worked as a chief winemaker in Italy and Germany for 10 years while Max, who is the General Manager, worked as a consultant at McKinsey & Co. in Argentina and the US for several years.
When they felt ready in 2003 to start their new venture they located it in Agrelo. The village, at a height of 900 ~1,000 meters, is situated at the foothills of the Andes Mountain Range.
The terroir is considered to be one of the very best in Argentina producing wines which are concentrated, well-structured, complex and possess excellent ageing potential.
jpgThe brothers also make wines in the Maipu area and the Uco Valley, two other excellent vine growing areas.
Their main focus is to create wines expressing well the different terroirs and growing conditions.
Their aim is to create wines which are elegant rather than highly extracted and powerful as is still quite common.

The estate was named "Huarpe" to honour the Huarpe People, the peaceful and hardworking natives that inhabited Mendoza's vast territory before the Spanish conquest in the 16th century.
In the same spirit the different kinds of wines produced are named in the Huarpe lanuage after the terroir in wich the vines grow.
