The Domaine R de la Grange is a family estate and owned by a father and son team of the eighth generation. The domaine has a surface of 27 hectares and is located near Nantes. While the region belongs to the Loire appellation, the much cooler climate here is influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. The name "Muscadet" is rather odd as it is neither the grape variety nor the name of a location as is usual for French wines. The designation is meant to refer to a musk-like flavor of the Melon de Bourgogne grape variety, which, however, most will find very hard to detect. The hardy variety was introduced to the region at the beginning of the 17th century. The region is composed of different soils such as silt and sand above sub-soils of gneiss or schist or granite or volcanic rock. All soil variations drain well and this is important for the vines. Essentially two kinds of Muscadet are produced, the Muscadet simple and the Muscadet-sur-lie. Both are dry but the "sur-lie" wines have a creamier taste and a fuller body mouthfeel and more texture. This derives from staying for a long period in contact with the yeast cells in the barrel. To keep the flavour and texture, the wines are bottled directly from the casks without filtration. It should be noted that the Muscadet is the only wine in France regulated to not exceed a degree of 12% of alcohol (which makes it the perfect wine to accompany seafood of all kinds). Muscadet are best consumed within 2-3 years, some top grade ones though may age up to 10 years. The Domaine R de la Grange produces an extensive variety of wines. The Gros Plant, a selection of traditional Muscadet-sur-lie, an exceptional Muscadet Goulaine, an unusual, fruity Chardonnay, two red wines and a selection of sparkling wines. They have also been awarded numerous awards for the quality of their wines.

The estate is named “San Simone” after a 14th century church which is located near to where, in 1915, the great-great grandfather of the current owners started the winery. Over time the winery was relocated from Prata to Porcia to be closer to the family’s vineyards. Processing the ripe grapes quickly during the wine making process, handling them gently and without much manipulation is of utmost importance to produce high quality wines. The 60 hectares which constitute the estate consists of vineyards in five different locations. PORCIA The loose soils mixed with clay, limestone, sand and silt are perfect to grow high quality white wine grapes. AZZANO DECIMO This soil of alluvial origin, rich with clay and limestone is best suited to grow Cabernet grapes. CONEGLIANO The soil of calcareous clay and sandstone subsoil is best suited for Glera, a white grape variety. DOC FRIULI GRAVE Grave stands for the kind of gravely, alluvial soil of the region. The mostly white wines from the region are reputed for their crisp nature, aromatic complexity and varietal intensity. DOC PROSECCO DOC Prosecco is Italy’s largest vine growing region. The Glera grape, of which most Prosecco are made, grows well in this area. The younger generation of the Brisotto family who is now in charge (Chiara, Anna and Antonio) have committed the company to follow the path of “Sustainable Viticulture”. Sustainable farming is not a set of rules what and what not to do as each soil and environment has to be handled individually. Farming in sustainable ways means to improve (at least sustain) the organic health of the soil and the environment for the next generation, create a safe and healthy working environment now and permanently reduce or at least minimize any environmental impact an action taken may have.

The estate is located on the hills overlooking the confluence of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. Le Clos du Notaire started out as a small family vineyard which the wife of Maitre Menard (a Notary) inherited in the mid-19th century. His son-in-law Maitre Henri Coutin (also a Notary) in turn inherited the estate and was followed by his son. Over time the estate became known as the "Cru du Notaire" (vineyard of the Notary). In the 1950s it was so named officially. In 1974 the estate was taken over by Sylvette and Roland Charbonnier who have since restructed the vineyards and modernized it. One criteria which makes the chateau stand out is the diversity of its soil. The soil is mainly composed of iron-rich gravel over fossil limestone. Limestone retains moisture in dry weather and provides good drainage in cool periods. Many of France's greatest wines derive from grapes grown on limestone which provides sweeter grapes and excellent nutrients to grapes in general. But limestone lacks iron. It is the combination of limestone and iron in the soil which produces the greatest wines. The combination brings richness, power, depth and complexity to the wines and a concentration which enables the wines to mature and age very well for many years to come. The estate encompasses 21 hectares with two distinct plots of land: The "Le Clos du Notaire" with 15 hectares and a terroir which is mainly composed of gravel on clay-limestone. The "Notaris Grand Reserve" with 5 hectares and a terroir of iron-rich gravel over asteria fossil limestone. "Le Clair du Notaire" is made from young wines grown in varying places and constituting about 1 hectare from which the rose wine is made. The average age of the vines is about 30 years with the oldest vines dating form 1956. Merlot is the main grape variety grown, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Fifty percent of the Grand Reserve wine is aged in new French oak barrels while a lesser percentage of barrel ageing is used for the Clos du Notaire wine. While the taste of the wines vary depending upon the vintage, they are of a deep dark colour, have lightly toasted aromas in their youth and complex, ripe fruits bouquets after they matured. They are full bodied, intense and powerful on the palate but with well-rounded tannins.
